It’s been a while since I published my last photoshop chop. In the last couple of weeks, I was busy building 1:24 scale models for the model show in Jabbeke. The show has been canceled due to the Corona virus, unfortunately. Yesterday, I wanted to work on a woody conversion of an early 1950’s Mercedes-Benz, but a friend of mine from the air-cooled club asked me to submit a picture for a virtual meet. Well, then… a virtual model ist what I submitted today. I adapted the woody wagon body onto a Volkswagen Beetle and the result looks somewhat convincing, I hope. I extended the wheelbase a little bit to accomodate four doors.

Once finished with the conversion, I couldn’t help myself and stayed awake another hour or so to create a customized version. It features a Deutz luftgekühlt badge and several period-correct stickers. Chrome steelies, raked stance and a Union76 antenna ball add to the old-school vibe on the vehicle. It was a lot of fun creating this little woody.

Avid readers of my photoshop blog might remember that I have modified the Chevrolet 3100 Pick-up before, but with a totally different intent. Back in 2011, I converted the truck to a dually setup to increase payload and chopped the top just for fun. This time around, the same truck serves as a canvas for a different idea. NASCAR introduced trucks in the mid-1990’s and I wondered what a more historic take on this idea might have looked like. It depends on the engine setup if it would be fast. The added aerodynamics might help the old truck to look sportier, but it still is a rather large brick. I could have chopped the top, but ultimately decided against it.

Two Doors   |   Two Seats   |   Two Bunks?

An idea. A quick doodle on a small sheet of paper. A couple of hours tinkering with Adobe Photoshop… and two doors of the mighty Mk4 Chevrolet Caprice Station Wagon have vanished into the digital nirvana, where deleted pixels enjoy their retirement. I purposely didn’t shorten neither the wheelbase nor the overall length, because I wanted to create a wagon that really looks long. This is further accentuated by the extra low stance, courtesy of an airride system and relocated wheel arches. I kept the roof rack, because somebody might want to strap a couple of surfboards to it and head to the beach. The BBS multi-piece wheels I had on the first iteration got replaced by five star steelies, thanks to a Jaguar S-Type picture my buddy Vladimir Ljadov shot at Raceism in Poland last year. All in all a rather quick, but satisfying project. Let me know if you like this big barge sitting on the ground.

Just for fun   |   Not likely anybody would actually do this

A couple of weeks ago I found this cheerful press photo of a USDM Geo Metro LSi (aka Suzuki Swift or Suzuki Cultus) and instantly knew I wanted to photoshop it. A quick just-for-fun project. Lower it, chose a set of interesting wheels, clean up some areas on the body and add a front spoiler – done. Fun was had and it was finished rather quickly. If you don’t like the car, look at the driver instead and get hit with those 1990’s memory flashback vibes.

Growing up at the French border gave me the opportunity to enjoy the weird and quirky French cars. At a very young age, I was fascinated by the sheer elegance of the big Citroën cars parked in the lowest position of the hydropneumatic suspension. Seeing them sink into or rise from their “sleep” position always was the icing on the cake and put a smile on my face. These days now, air suspension setups are the norm, but for me it will always be a reminder of days long gone, when the French engineers’ ingeniuity and driving comfort was more important than the bean counters interference in vehicle development. This photoshop depicts a dream of my younger self: being able to actually drive the Citroën CX in the low position and fit larger multipiece wheels. Ça c’est une voiture très belle.

Yes, there is something missing in this picture. No, I didn’t photoshop it out. This Jaguar E-Type doesn’t have exhaust pipes because it has an electric drivetrain. Jaguar unveiled a modern revival of the E-Type roadster with an all-electric, zero-emission powertrain in 2017. The vehicle is called the E-Type Zero and has a 40 kWh battery-powered electric motor. It can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and has a range of 168 miles (270km) on a full charge. The battery pack is designed to fit in the space occupied by the original six-cylinder motor without any modifications, and will fit in any model Jaguar using the same motor. The single-speed transmission replaces the original gearbox. In August 2018, Jaguar confirmed it will offer all-electric E-Types for sale starting in summer 2020. You can order yours now. To wet your appetite, I lowered the E-Type for an improved stance and fitted a more contemporary wheel and tire combination.

A quick lunchtime photoshop chop once again. A friend complained that I hardly ever photoshop Audis. Well, there’s a reason for that, but I made an exception and went creative on a classic Audi 100 C1. Found this tracking shot of a USDM model and modified it. Obviously the car was lowered and the steelies have a larger diameter now, albeit still featuring a thin white-wall line so typical for this period and location. The rear fender has been relocated because I didn’t want the wheel to disappear into the fender. Quick & dirty? No. Quick and clean style just for fun.

It is not often that I use an old black and white picture as a base for a photoshop chop. But sometimes I stumble upon a picture and immediately know what to do with it. Subtle, clean and simple, but with great impact was the idea this time around. The Opel Rekord C delivery van (Lieferwagen) has been lowered, the rear fenders have been widened and the grille has been modified. This gives it a muscle-car-like look and certainly more presence, doesn’t it? Just the right amount of lowering to give it a proper stance adds to the presence. Larger diameter and wider steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps go well with the classic overall look and keep the retro vibes.

Sometimes a “quickie lunchbreak photoshop chop” is abandoned because of a small glitch that can’t be fixed at the time. In this case, I forgot the picture on my hard drive for a couple of years. With years more experience now, the then-unfixable glitch was remedied in a matter of not even 15 minutes and the chop finished.

Jaguar XJ-S Notchback Hot Rod

Building the Hasegawa Jaguar XJ-S kit in 1:24 scale, I noticed that it is virtually impossible to lower the car properly without modifying the wheel arches. Bolt-on overfender are always an option, but it didn’t feel right with the lines of this classy coupé. Instead of cutting up the body of the plastic model, I put it back into the box and switched to Adobe Photoshop. After many failed attempts to relocate the wheel arches, I decided to hotrod the sled just for fun. This is entirely fictional for now, but could be done in reality. XJ-S prices are low and it isn’t exactly a rare car nobody dares to cut apart and weld back together in a different way.

The frame was extended to get the proportions right and to make it less butt-heavy than the stock design, I reshaped the C-pillars. Inspiration for this mod came, believe it or not, from the foxbody Mustang notchback. I think it improves the proportions of the car, but at the same time takes away one of the design quirks that make the XJ-S so unique and instantly recognizable. In order to keep with the classic hot rod theme, I didn’t use the Jaguar V12, but added four cylinders to a Ford V8 just for the heck of it. Open headers should provide an adequate soundtrack to match the visual impact.

Some may say that bolt-on overfenders and widebody kits are a little played out now and I tend to agree somewhat. However – if applied to a platform that nobody has on the radar, there is still an element of surprise. I always had a love/hate relationship with the Bugatti EB110.

Yeah… this is a rather unlikely combination, but I just did it for fun. Who in real life would lower a very capable 4×4 like the new Suzuki Jimny JB74 to the ground, stick NASCAR wheels on the hubs and hook a rather heavy camping trailer to the tow bar? Nobody. But hey… it was a lunchbreak photoshop challenge #justforfun.

International Lonestar with Tanker Trailer

After a long time since creating thetop-chopped Harley-Davidson Special Edition Lonestar, I wanted to create another one. The 2008 International Lonestar looks like a show truck from the factory and it didn’t need much customizing to create the slick rig you see in the picture. Lowered, larger diameter wheels with low profile tires and a a little clean-up here and there.

Recently a friend and I discussed which OEM wheel has the best design. We agreed on the deep dish five-spoke Mitsubishi Starion wheel and thought it wouold look good on most vehicles. Just for fun and because I wanted to chop a V6 Nissan anyway, I fitted them on a Nissan Maxima J30. Just a quick photoshop chop with lowering, larger diameter wheels, replacing chrome with shadow line parts, window tint and deleting the rear door handles.

Buick Park Avenue Ultra

From an old people carrier to a surf bums’ beach ride. With barges like the Buick Park Avenue being rather cheap on the used car market, it is easy to imagine that a half-broke surfer dude would buy a car that has a lot of space. No money to fix the broken rear window? Just rivet in a random piece of sheet metal for extra privacy and use the leftover money from the last job to buy nice Trans-Am style wheels, fake wood trim for that old school look and a handful of hobby-related stickers.
