South African Nissan Bakkie 1200 & 1400

Reading the Speedhunters story about a properly built South African Nissan Bakkie 1400 reminded me of the time when I lived in South Africa. Digging through the pictures on my hard drive revealed quite a few pictures of these lovely little, but sturdy and tough, trucklets.

Road Trip South Africa | Tame Seal in Hout Bay

Having enjoyed the awesome Chapmans Peak Drive, we stopped for lunch in Hout Bay. After a great tasting serving of fish & chips in a restaurant we took a walk in the warm sun. On the pier we found a local who was feeding fish to a tame harbor seal. Quite amazing to see the friendship between a wild animal and a human.

Beach and Cars Meet Muizenberg South Africa | photography by Sebastian Motsch (2012)

Road Trip South Africa | Car Meeting in Muizenberg

Minding my own business driving along the South African coast near Muizenberg in April 2012, I noticed a gathering of modified vehicles near the beach. Naturally I stopped my rental Hyundai to have a look. The guys are heavily into German cars, with a strong focus on Volkswagen. Being a German sure was a bonus in the situation and led to an interesting conversation. Unfortunately I only had time for a few quick pictures.

Road Trip South Africa | Franshoek, Muizenberg, Cape Point, Scarborough, Kommetjie

Good wine needs plenty of sun – but a certain amount of rain is also necessary. Well then, if you miss pictures of grapes in bright sunlight in this gallery, try google. It rained pretty much the whole time we spent in the beautiful town of Franshoek. Nonetheless we had a great time looking around all the curio and art shops on the main street.

Road Trip South Africa | Beaufort West, Meiringspoort Pass, De Rust

Driving through the Klein Karoo, eating lekker Biltong we bought at a small farm stall and enjoying the open space is quite relaxing. Nothing prepared me for the sudden change in landscape as we entered the Meiringspoort Pass. Marizca was definitely right – sleeping over in Beaufort West and driving through the gorge early in the morning is certainly recommendable!

Road Trip South Africa | Johannesburg, Kimberley, Beaufort West

My friend Marizca and me wanted to go on a road trip for quite a while. First it took me four years to be able to go back to South Africa – and then it happened all of a sudden and rather spontaneous. I booked the flight just a week in advance. Fortunately Marizca had just finished her exams and was able to take ten days off 🙂

Road Trip South Africa | The first couple of days

Welcome home to South Africa

After living in South Africa for nine months, I eventually had to leave in April 2008 – with tears in my eyes, because I had the most awesome time and found many friends. Before leaving I promised to come back as soon as possible – but I never imagined that it would take me four years! But nonetheless, it didn’t feel like four years at all once I arrived in Jozi.

South Africa | Visser Street House

When I moved to South Africa in 2007, all I had was  slip of paper with contact details telling me where I could rent a room. When I left nine months later in April 2008, I literally left home! Heidi and Debbie had become close friends, amongst many others.
