Franshoek to Kommetjie

15.04.2012   |   Franshoek → Muizenberg → Cape Point → Scarborough → Kommetjie

Good wine needs plenty of sun – but a certain amount of rain is also necessary. Well then, if you miss pictures of grapes in bright sunlight in this gallery, try google. It rained pretty much the whole time we spent in the beautiful town of Franshoek. Nonetheless we had a great time looking around all the curio and art shops on the main street. A little later, Marizca acted as the new voice of the navigation system, guiding me towards La Roche Estate. Michael is a real gentlemen and has been a good friend of hers for many years. Unfortunately he only had time for a brief, but very inspirational and enjoyable chat. We eventually moved on towards Stellenbosch. But a little sign next to the road mandated a detour to the famous Franshoek Motor Museum. Click here to see the pictures.

Franshoek to Kommetjie

Due to more rain, we skipped looking at Stellenbosch and made our way down to the coast. Just before entering Muizenberg, we found a little car show on a parking lot next to the beach. Naturally I had to stop and ask the guys if it was OK to take a few pictures. They are heavily into German cars, so being a German definitely had advantages and led to an interesting conversation…

Next stop was to say hello to the penguins at Boulders Beach. The timing was perfect, about an hour before sunset. The little fellas came out of the water and very close to the camera. A special moment, because there was hardly anybody around. Oh, the joys of off-season travel 🙂

We arrived at the gate to the Cape of Good Hope nature reserve a few minutes too late – it was already closed for the day. Oh well, we figured we’d find another spot to see the southernmost sunset of our trip. And indeed: the sunset in Scarborough was breathtaking – with pounding waves, a strong offshore wind and spectacular clouds. Believe me, it was rather hard to select just a few of the many pictures for this gallery!

On to Kommetjie with the last light of the day, where we had trouble to find the backpackers we had booked in advance. Drove past it several times, with the navigation system indicating a different location every time. Weird. After a tasteful dinner not far from the lighthouse, we retreated to the backpackers. What we woke up to? Read about it in the next chapter…
