220 Woodie Wagon

Let’s start the New Year with an old project I finished during the Christmas holidays: the Mercedes-Benz W187 220 Woodie Wagon.

Imagine you had a W187 but needed more space for passengers and luggage. Mercedes-Benz didn’t offer wagon variants of their cars in the 1950’s so you had to approach a body building company and request a custom wagon conversion. In Europe, these have been traditionally built from aluminium or steel in Europe by companies like Binz, Miesen and others. This time I wanted to create an American style woodie wagon, so I started by chopping the car behind the A-pillar and replaced it with a wooden while keeping the wheelbase stock. The rear fenders had to be completely reshaped, but I made sure they didn’t lose their original look. Happy with the result I called it quits… and immediately started a Hot Rod variant, which will be posted later this year. Stay tuned.
