DeSoto Powerdome Eight powered Hot Rod

ScaleAuto Magazine Special Issue Contest Cars 2010 120pxThe vintage Smer scale model kit of the Alfa Romeo Tipo 158 racecar was a flea-market find that cost just five Euros. It sat on the shelf for a long time until I stumbled upon a beautiful DeSoto Firedome Eight engine a fellow modeler sold at the model show in Jabbeke, Belgium. As I am not the person who builds kits box stock, I knew what needed to be done, as the rocker covers matched the body contour of the Alfa Romeo perfectly. A set of Fujimi Porsche 917 center-lock wheels and wide tires ensure that there is enough rubber to get at least some traction. The driver is held in place with a set of photo-etched SABELT seatbelts and protected by a scratch-built rollbar made from Evergreen rods bent to shape. The headers and exhaust pipes are mare from the same material and covered with metal mesh where necessary. Headlights and Brooklands windscreen are from a Tamiya Lotus Super Seven kit. The model has been featured in Scale Auto Magazine Contest Cars 2009.
