Tokyo | Daikanyama T-Site
Following a long instagram conversation with a French car enthusiast from Tokyo led to the great honour of being invited to join the Sunday breakfast meet of their Classic Car Club. The alarm woke me up very early, as I was told to wait outside my hostel at 6 am to be picked up by a club member. Six o’clock on the dot, a familiar diesel sound became audible and a lovely Peugeot 504 drove around the corner.
“Guten Morgen, mein Name ist Shimpei Suga” were the words entering my ears, but not really processed by the brain, which was still half asleep. German? Wow! The warm greeting in my mother language was a great start to the (English) conversation we had on the way to the venue: Daikanyama T-Site. Arriving there and meeting the other club members for breakfast was a treat, but it took a while to figure out who had actually invited me. They excused him as he couldn’t be present unfortunately and we would meet later that day. Getting to know each other was very interesting and absolutely no problem language-wise, thanks to the English skills of some members who thankfully translated.
Delicious breakfast finished, the club members showed me around Daikanyama T-Site and also introduced me to my (since then favourite) book shop: Tsutaya Books. Detailed browsing the vast amount of automotive and architecural books was postponed to a solo visit later one and we moved outside to admire the club members cars and take a group photo.
Already very impressed by the variety of cars and the individual stories, a Ferrari Dino 246 driving past put the proverbial cherry on the cake.
Being asked what kind of plan I had for the day, my reply that there was no plan and spontaneous is always best, they invited me to join them for a drive to Setagaya. Of course I agreed, smiling from ear to ear. Being German, I was invited to ride shotgun in Moriyama-sans’ left hand drive BMW E36 318is Coupé, which he bought new and tastefully modified with AC Schnitzer wheels, a Recaro racing seat for the driver and KW suspension.
