Arriving at Pont à Mousson well after 1 am, I found the aire des camping cars closed but was too tired to continue driving. In order to avoid blocking anybody who wanted to leave in the morning, I parked my Mercedes-Benz Sprinter off to the side, out of the way and went to sleep immediately. Well before daylight dawned, I heard muffled voices outside. Fortunately I understood that they weren’t too bothered about the van and set up their fishing gear. When I woke up again two hours later and went outside to greet them with a bonjour, an apology and an offer of hot tea, they were delighted that “l’Allemand” spoke their language and we had a nice chat. I am eternally grateful that I got to learn this beautiful language very early in my life. Pont à Mousson is a beautiful, tranquil town on the river Moselle (Mosel).
